Here's what happened in this afternoon's action-packed session. I lost count of the amount of times that Hrothgar went unconscious - reminded me a bit of Mignola's typical performances in Keep on the Shadowfell.

Juma recovers from filth fever, having been nursed back to health during the night by Sora and Ulther.

The PCs return to the Black Dolphin’s Wake and head back down into the chambers below the tavern after they’ve spent some time trying to work out if Riyad is a wererat on account of his buck teeth. Hrothgar leads the way out of the room where the party fought the rat-things into a sewer tunnel where they are attacked by another rat-thing hexer, more rat-things, two wererats and a visejaw crocodile. The hexer envelopes the battlefield with a vexing cloud to make it hard for the PCs to see its allies. Sora kills three rat-things with her dragon breath as Juma Ji’ad triggers a spear-trap while moving round to attack from the rear. Hrothgar goes unconscious for the first of several times as he takes damage from a wererat’s crossbow and from a stinging hex.

Sora and Juma finish off the crocodile as Hrothgar chases down and kills the hexer. The paladin tries to leap across the sewer channel but cocks it up and falls in. Both wererats flank Hrothgar and knock him unconscious again. One is grabbed by Juma’s lighting lure and pulled back so that Ulthar can kill him; the other escapes through a secret door. The party takes a short rest before checking out the small room behind a door, finding some mouldy rope and a silver key marked with the symbol of Varuna, Sahasran god of the oceans and rivers. Gil tries to jump over the sewer channel and, like Sora, falls in, becoming infected with filth fever.

Next, the PCs go through the secret door which the wererat fled through. Beyond is a room with a sinister looking demonic statue standing on a bloodstained altar. The chamber is occupied by zombies and wererats. The wererats open fire with their crossbows on Hrothgar who uses his great cleave on the zombies before going unconscious yet again. Ulthar is grabbed by a zombie and Gil is also knocked out by a crossbow shot. Once the zombies are all killed, the statue dominates Ulthar, forcing him to attack poor old Hrothgar who has managed to get up again for a moment before being felled for a second time. The PCs kill two of the wererats, then start trying to smash the statue while Hrothgar and Ulthar chase the third lycanthrope into a warehouse above, and then into the streets of the Dock Ward where they lose him. Juma smashes the statue into smithereens. The party search the room and find various sinister objects on the altar including a still-beating human heart.

Despite some of the party being the worse for wear, the PCs decide to press on and open the door to the room opposite. There are more giant rats inside so the PCs charge in, not noticing the two chokers lurking above the doorway which grab hold of Ulthar and Sora. Gil casts thunderwave, blasting the rats but also hitting Juma. Sora escapes from the choker but Hrothgar is grabbed instead. When the paladin attacks the monster with radiant delirium, the aberration swings the gnoll in front of it as a shield so he takes the full force of damage from the prayer.

Eventually the PCs are victorious and head upstairs to see Riyad after looting the room. They drag the wererats’ bodies up with them but as these have now transformed back into human form, Riyad isn’t keen to have these in his pub and insists the PCs dump them back in the sewers. In any event, he doesn’t recognise the dead. He does tell the PCs that the warehouse the stairs led up to is owned by someone called Vitalius who has “connections”.

Satisfied that the rats have been dealt with by the PCs, Riyad pays the party the rest of their fee (90 gp)

Re: Cloven Sora
Hohoho, you're quite right! That's at least three "friendly fire" incidents then.

We'll continue the conversation with Riyad next session, and also see if Gil has recovered from his filth fever or got worse....
