Freeport Campaign: Final Session

After 68 sessions, spanning over eight years of real time and just under a year and a half of game time, the Freeport Campaign is finished. The PCs started at first level with Death in Freeport and ended up reaching epic level by defeating the great wyrm Ashardalon in the Bastion of Broken Souls. Thanks to Andy, Gavin, Kate, Matt and Tim (and Jon and Emily) for being such great players. It’s been great fun!

Here’s what happened in this afternoon’s final session:

20th Wealsun

Having rested and spent hours discussing team tactics, Kal, Garth and Grey cast a number of protective spells on the party, including energy immunity (fire), enlarge person on Slasher and Garth, anti-dragon aura, fly and many more. Once they’ve finished getting prepared, the PCs step through the brilliant light into the Node where Ashardalon waits. The colossal half-fiend great wyrm is in the centre of the room, drinking from the “waterfall” of soul stuff that pours from above. He is accompanied by a kobold who stands on top of a 30’ high iron tower. Inside the chamber, the PCs start to gain extra hit points from contact with the soul stuff (as they first did on arrival on the Positive Energy Plane), and run the risk of exploding with too much life.

Ashardalon speaks, welcoming the PCs to the center of the Bastion of Unborn Souls, now rechristened as the Bastion of Broken Souls, and asking them to explain why they are trepassing here. “Fuck off!” shouts Kal and battle is joined. Nurn manages to kill Pemoka the kobold straight away with a finger of death as the others try and hit the dragon but only manage to get rid of his mirror images. Then, Ashardalon breathes but his breath is acid not fire which the PCs are unprepared for. Kal is fortunately too high in the air to be caught in the cone but Slasher, Myrtle and Nurn are not so lucky, taking up to 240 hp damage each. On the next round Myrtle attacks, revealing herself as the descendant of Dydd – she starts to glow with a bright ruby red light and Ashardalon screams in terror, unable to act for a round. The other PCs take advantage: Kadia inflicts a critical hit with her iron fists and Kal manages to reduce the dragon from 606hp to 303hp with avasculate. Ashardalon soon recovers, snatching Slasher in his jaws and Myrtle with his claw, striking Nurn with his wings and slapping down Garth and Kadia with his tail. Grey turns Slasher into gaseous form so he can escape but Myrtle struggles to get free. Grey dismisses the spell once Slasher is free of Ashardalon’s mouth, leaving the raging barbarian free to deliver the killing blow to the dragon.

As Ashardalon collapses, Ammet the balor which served as the dragon’s heart bursts from his chest. Lacking gratitude for his rescue, Ammet attacks the PCs, hitting Slasher with his whip, Helltongue, and inflicting four negative levels on the barbarian. Grey casts mass heal and Kal casts another avasculate – this one luckily stuns the half-dragon demon, making it much easier for Garth and Kadia to hit and allowing Myrtle and Nurn to do sneak attacks. Before the balor can attack again, Slasher lays into him, power attacking and finishing him off with a series of mighty blows. With a huge bang, Ammet’s body explodes, inflicting 100 hp damage on the PCs but fortunately they all survive.

After they’ve gathered up the treasure from Ashardalon, Ammet and Pemoka’s bodies, the PCs go to leave the Bastion. Outside the Node, they are met by five “soulscapers”, beings of positive energy. These strange creatures thank the PCs for repairing the circle of life by putting an end to Ashardalon and reward each PCs with a “soul jolt” (fast healing 5 and a one-time contingent true resurrection that will bring a PC back to life immediately if he or she is killed).

The PCs return to their home in Gryrax, now 21st (Epic) level and among the most powerful mortal creatures in existence. Few powers outshine theirs and even the deities know their names. They are counted as heroes, now and forever.

Thank you
Rich, just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work and fantastic DM-ing over the past 8 years (and the additional 20 years prior to that that I probably have never said thank you for before either!).

It's been a fantastic campaign and I enjoyed all of it, from ungrateful bastard townspeople in Freeport to batshit weird giant demonic clock mechanisms to murderous Oriental sociopaths (and their half-witted apprentices).

So, goodbye Kal. I look forward to converting you to 4e Epic level at some point for a special cameo in future adventures. In fact, you may even make guest appearances in my campaign... :)

Thanks, Rich, and here's to Parsantium!

Re: Thank you
And thank you from me too on behalf of late comers everywhere. Every campaign needs a calm and tolerant DM, especially in the face of muttered player insults to colossal red dragons accusing them of imbibing too many pints of heavy.

Re: Thank you
Andy, thanks for that - it means a lot to know you've enjoyed the campaign!

Gavin, not sure I've been that "calm & tolerant" but thanks!

Re: Thank you
Well said, Andy.

And farewell to Myrtle: my first and favourite rogue. Glad to hear there's the prospect of Epic adventuring one day in the future - she'd die of boredom otherwise.

Re: Thank you
It's always nice to dust off some old much-loved characters and bring them out of retirement so we'll definitely have to give this a go!
