Here’s what happened in last night’s game. I got the age of the corpses in the room with the staircase mixed up: there were a number of recent corpses, obviously half-eaten by rats, piled on top of some older, skeletal remains.

Session xp = 381 xp each.

6th Maius (contd)

Ella, El’em and Gong are joined by Krivinn. The four agree to help Riyad with his rat problem for 100gp. The buck-toothed landlord shows the PCs into the private room off the bar where he stores his barrels of Marlin Brew. There is a bad smell in here, coming from one corner. Krivinn smashes open the barrel of beer standing here, flooding the room and washing away a few rats but there are no dead bodies inside. However, Gong is able to determine there’s a trap door beneath the remains of the barrel.

Ella climbs down the rickety spiral staircase  leading into the room below; when she spots two rat swarms and a pair of dire rats, she climbs back up sharpish. Krivinn, though, is much braver and rushes downstairs where he is overwhelmed by the rat swarms and ends up unconscious. The others try and help, killing the two dire rats but El’em manages to fall off the staircase into the swarms in the process. Eventually area-effect powers win the day and all the rats are killed. Both Gong and Krivinn were bitten by dire rats; the cleric contracts filth fever. Worn out by the combat, the PCs withdraw to their houseboats to rest after searching the room, finding some rusty knives and cleavers and a silver ring set with a red garnet worth 180 gp

7th Maius

The PCs return to the Black Dolphin’s Wake and head back down the stairs. In the next room, the PCs encounter four large rats with evil-looking human faces. One of these is a spellcaster who fills the room with a vexing cloud which helps conceal the rats from the party. The PCs still manage to kill them all, despite triggering a spear trap and being hit by stinging hexes by the rat-sorcerer. Krivinn puts on the +1 cloak of resistance as the PCs head through a couple of doors into the sewers beyond. There, a big battle ensues with wererats, more rat-things and a large visejaw crocodile which manages to grab Krivinn. After a long, tough fight, the PCs are victorious.

I must protest.
you have made me sound like some sort of coward! that was a tactical retreat! what, pray, is a ranger with a longbow supposed to do against swarms? run down and fall unconscious? who would have saved "brave" krivinn's life then?? grrrrrrrrrr.

Re: I must protest.
That wasn't my intention - sorry! Clearly, as a ranger, your job is to scout ahead, withdraw to a tactically advantageous position and provide covering fire while the meat shield holds the line!

Re: I must protest.
I must support your tactics here, dancing cheese.

It was sharp of you to realize your longbow would do no gouda. ;-)

I tease and I couldn't resist the terrible jokes. :-D

But seriously, you have a valid point.

This is more like it! Bring on the ratty minions and their poorly made stairs!

Hang on. 'Bucked toothed' landlord; recent bodies in the cellar. Me thinks there is more to Riyad than meets the eye.

Mental note to check the current moon cycle when we are above ground!

Re: Victory
Seems odd that Riyad should hire outsiders, thus drawing attention to what is downstairs, if it's something he wants to keep quiet. More interesting perhaps is who he bought the place from, and why they were in such a hurry to sell. Perhaps the previous owner had suffered some horrid fate which Riyad was too naive to find out about...

Riyad should be encouraged to brick up the first door. He gains a cellar, the rat things lose access to his property. If we want to "enjoy" continuing access to the sewers at this point, there is a manhole we can use to access the second room.

Re: Victory
I suppose outsiders are more quickly forgotten than bumping off locals. I'm sure all will be revealed......

Re: Victory
Recent talk in the Fat Grouper has included tales of the odd longshoreman or two going missing. The assumption is that they staggered home drunk and fell into the Dolphin Strait.....

Richard- i shall expect a more favourable write-up next time! ;-)

Re: hmmm
I think getting thwacked a lot does usually go hand in hand with being written about a lot (cf Red Hand of Doom session logs)!
