The World of Parsantium

World Map
World Map

Here's a map showing some of the lands surrounding Parsantium. I adapted this map from the one by Martin Springett in Guy Gavriel Kay's Sarantine Mosaic books.

Any suggestions for what to call the lands to the West that make up the fallen Batiaran Empire? I'm trying to avoid anything sounding like Europe.

Not-Europe
The greek Europa, from whose name Europe derives, is a lunar goddess who possibly is a parallel of the Phoenecian Astarte. So maybe a variant on that would work - Astartea, perhaps?

Re: Not-Europe
Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think I'll be able to say Arstartea - I'll have a play around and try not to end up with Astoria!

You see! I can't even write "Astartea"!

Here's some more food for thought (from the Wikipedia entry for Erebus):

Here's some more food for thought (from the Wikipedia entry for Erebus):

<<In Greek mythology, Erebus or Erebos (Ancient Greek: Ἔρεβος, English translation: "deep blackness/darkness or shadow") was the son of a primordial god Chaos and represented the personification of darkness and shadow, which filled in all the corners and crannies of the world.... The word is probably from Proto-Indo-European language, *h1regwos, cognate to Old Norse røkkr, Gothic riqis "darkness", Sanskrit rajani "night", Tocharian orkäm "darkness". Another suggestion is a loan from Semitic, c.f. Hebrew erebh and Akkadian erebu "sunset, evening" (hence, "darkness"). The same etymology of "sunset" has been suggested for Europe.>>

Orkam, the land of darkness...

Hmm, I think I just discovered one of those Things You're Not Allowed To Do in thread text. Never mind, it's all there, just with a wierd error message embedded in it.

Yes, and only people with paid accounts can edit their comments :(

I like the Sunset Lands as we're talking about an area to the West of Parsantium. The sun has definitely set on the Batiaran Empire, and there's a nice little etymological connection with Europe. Fits in with the Dark Ages and Points of Light too. So, they're the Sunset Lands, also known as Erebu, the Land of Darkness, particularly among the Akhrani.

Thanks!
