More 4e Previews

Here's a couple of cool pictures of monsters: the stirge and the shadar-kai:

Also, go here for an excerpt on experience points and treasure, including some stuff on the magic item economy. Basically, PCs can sell magic items for 20% market price, making it more attractive to keep items found as treasure. And go here for an article on magic items themselves including a few sample items. 4e doesn't go as far as Iron Heroes but it's less "about the stuff" by the sounds of it.

Magic items
Oh dear, I think they need to be very careful here. I'm all in favour on less emphasis on magic items, as you can tell from my current character!

But at the same time magic items are one of the things players most hunger for, especially when you are new to the game.

I agree - I like magic items too! This quote is good though:

The characters don’t find magic items that are beneath their notice—they won’t walk out of the drow enclave with a wheelbarrow full of +1 rapiers.

Made me think of how many bits of kit (especially potions of pass without trace) you picked up in RHoD that no one wanted.

I also like that you can identify what most items do during a short rest without casting identify

Not so sure I quite understand how if magic items are so rare why there buy price is so relatively low.

I suppose characters in 3.5 are still prepared to lug low level magic items out of dungeons because they can use the money to buy better ones. Which isnt going to work in 4th edition.

This also leads on to the interesting question. If you can't buy magic items so readily in 4E then whats your motivation for gathering money. I can think of a 100 good roleplaying reasons to do so, but those that enjoy hack, slash and buying magical power with money may feel a bit left out.

Perhaps things come full circle. I remember in 2nd edition it was unthinkable in our campaigns that you could buy magic items. But back then you could also exchange gold for experience points. Perhaps they should reintroduce that!

Perhaps there will be less treasure around so the relative price will be similar? I think the point is there will be less +1 swords in the hands of mooks. When you find an item, it's likely to be something you'll want to keep which is a good thing.

We didn't use the 1gp = 1xp rule in 1st edition after the first few munchkin campaigns everyone plays in when they're 13!
