Gary Gygax, RIP

Just logged on to the internet to hear the very sad news that Gary Gygax has died, aged 69.

Without Gary, there wouldn't have been any D&D, Monday nights at the Green Man/Black Horse, Against the Giants, Vault of the Drow, Greyhawk or Nine Hells. He once replied to a question of mine on ENWorld about Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure and I was thrilled. He'll be missed.

Sad, but not entirely a shock - he's been known to be in poor health for a while now. He was Captain_Playdoh at ENWorld, wasn't he? Seemed like a decent old stick.

I suspect that roleplaying in some form would have come about whoever the originator; for instance, Greg Stafford seems to have been groping towards it around the same time. If he'd got there first, though, the results would likely have been very different and, I suspect, less commercially successful. Certainly, Gygax and Arneson originated RPGs as we have come to know them.

Anyway, where's a bloody cleric to cast resurrection when you need 'em?

Col_Pladoh. He was seriously ill last year, I think. As well as co-creating D&D, he wrote nearly all of the memorable modules we played when I first got into D&D and spent much more time than he needed to answering fanboy questions on ENWorld. Very sad.
