The New OGL: $5,000

Details of how the new 4e OGL will work are here and several of the bigger d20 publishers are in a quandary, wondering whether it's worth paying $5,000 to bring out 4e compatible products from August 1st 2008 rather than January 1st 2009. Check out the livejournals of freeport_pirate, (Green Ronin),
open_design (Wolfgang Baur/Kobold Quarterly) and gmskarka (Adamant).

I think it's a shame if 4e's release isn't accompanied by some cool third party releases. After all, the first 3rd Edition adventure we played was Death in Freeport!

The new OGL appears also to be more tightly linked to D&D and the core books, which will make it difficult to create new free-standing games using the mechanics (e.g. True20, Mutants and Masterminds).

It seems that the SRD will also be less of a direct repetition of the core book rules, with additional "advice". I hope this doesn't reduce its utility for cutting and pasting, since that's been very useful; they may be lloking at this too much from the perspective of professional developers rather than Joe Public. Of course, they may also be aware that some of us never bought a 3.5 core book and just used the SRD instead...

I think they probably are, and that's why they've tightened this up. I'm not sure the SRD is going to contain all the monsters, spells, magic items etc as it does now. This will be very annoying as I love the Hypertext SRD.

You probably get everything with the 5k though, don't you? Maybe you should do that. . . (start doing the lottery again?)

It's a bit bonkers, but I've donated $25 to Open Design so that Wolfgang Baur can get hold of the 4e rules early and start producing stuff in time for August. If he doesn't raise the $5,000 dollars, we all get our money back. He's got $4,000 already so it's looking likely that Open Design will be in from the off.
