The Pogues at Brixton

For the second year running, I went to see the Pogues play one of their Christmas gigs at Brixton Academy, this time with kb98. There was no Philip Chevron but Shane looked pretty good in his long black leather coat and the band were as tight as ever. They played all of the big hits and old favourites, including Dirty Old Town, Thousands are Sailing, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, and The Body of an American which, coincidentally, we'd seen featured in an episode of The Wire the night before (the song is played at the wake of a dead cop and McNulty, Lester and Bunk all sing along).  It was a great night and Kate, who'd not seen the Pogues before, also really enjoyed it. The support, the Holloways, were very good too, doing a Cropdusters-style version of Bankrobber by the Clash. And of course, the gig ended with Fairytale of New York (complete with fake snow) and then Fiesta. Bloody brilliant!
