Judging a Book by its Cover

Crossposted from http://parsantium.wordpress.com/blog/

After 24 years working in bookselling, I know how important having a good cover is to selling a book. If the cover is dull, naff, or just badly illustrated or designed, no one is going to pick your book up to read the blurb on the back or have a look inside. And online, covers need to look cool even when they're shown in much reduced form on a webpage.

That's why getting a great cover for Parsantium: City at the Crossroads is something I am very passionate about. I want the cover image to show what's cool and different about the city and the player characters who have adventures there, and I needed to find a talented fantasy artist to do this.

I'm very pleased to have commissioned Joe Shawcross to illustrate the cover. You can have a look at some of his recent work here.

What's your favourite RPG cover? What do you like about it?

Shadowrun (1st & 2nd ed) maybe? It has your magic, your tech, your punk rock elves...

Yeah, yup. Also oh wait, no it is Harlequin's Back, that is actually my favorite, since it is Brom. Brom, Barlowe, that gothy stuff, that pushes my buttons.

The Brom stuff for Dark Sun was pretty cool too.

His work on Planescape is amazing, but he didn't do many covers. In fact, Planescape's cover art is not that great IMHO

Hands down, Taladas-The Minotaurs is my favorite RPG cover. Elmore's a good example of art, too.

The Black Company Campaign Setting.

I like the style of the 3.5 Eberron and FR books, with the large, wraparound scenes. But Wanye Reynold's Paizo stuff is so-so, which is weird, because they're so similar.

I'm not really familiar with the 2e Dragonlance stuff but that is a nice cover.

The Eberron covers from Wayne Reynolds are great - I love the Sharn illustration in particular. Will check out Black Company.
