Skill Challenges, First Impressions

Great post from D&D designer Robert Schwalb on how to run a skill challenge without breaking the fourth wall here:
Skill Challenges, First Impressions.

This follows on from his equally thoughtful post yesterday on good and bad skill challenge design. Interesting stuff. I don't think I've ever got skill challenges to work how I want them to in my games –  often the players get confused about what they're supposed to be doing, meaning I need to spell out which skills they can or can't use. There's a particularly complicated series of skill challenges coming up in the next session of Courts of the Shadow Fey and I'm thinking of taking a more freewheeling approach to the rules in order to keep the fourth wall as intact as possible.
