The Sky's Falling In!

After months of speculation, it looks like D&D 4th edition is really happening with more details to be announced at GenCon. Check out the countdown clock (to the annoucement, not the publication of the books - doh!)

There are already shedloads of threads on ENWorld. Let's hope all my 3.5 stuff will be somewhat compatible. It was pretty easy to use 1st edition books with 2nd edition, and 3.0 books with 3.5, but almost impossible to use 2nd edition books with 3e. Let's also hope that the OGL remains in some form so that companies such as Paizo can support the new rules rather than having to stick with 3.5.

Re: 4th Ed
It's not great, is it? 4dventure, indeed! They might have had to put it up in a hurry though as some muppet accidently put up the official 4th Edition messageboards yesterday - they were rapidly taken down and replaced with the clock.

We certainly don't need a new set of rules at all. Certainly, I have several years worth of 3.x stuff to run that I don't particularly want to convert. However, as you said, Wizards has a fleecing us for cash requirement as part of their business model. You never know - 4e might be quite good.

Re: 4th Ed
Maybe we don't need it, but I for one would be happy to see some streamlining, especially with the vast number of supplemental rulebooks that have come out in the years since 3.5. Who really needs that many rules? It's easy to spend way more time looking things up than actually roleplaying. Let's have fewer rules, lighter books to carry around. Controversial, I'm sure!
