Prague Castle

Yesterday we climbed the steep hill to Prague Castle: a whole complex of buildings overlooking the city with a huge, very tall gothic cathedral (to Saint Vitus) in the centre. My favourite part was Golden Lane, a narrow street of tiny medieval shops with an enclosed, slightly claustrophobic, gallery running above, full of suits of armour, weapons including halberds, swords and flails and a torture chamber complete with a rack, a cage, and a spiked chair. At one end was the White Tower which had two shops: one selling metal miniatures (too large for D&D unfortunately) and another selling replica suits of armour, helmets and weapons. Best of all, at the far end of the gallery, there was a crossbow range. For 50 Kc (about a quid), you could fire five bolts at a target from a real crossbow. I amazed myself by getting three out of four shots in the target and not too far from the bullseye. Kate had one go and also hit the target. Great fun!
