Durango & Silverton Railroad

One of the best things we did on our recent Southwest USA trip was ride the Durango & Silverton railroad. The train appears in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and a number of other Westerns. The train isn't cheap and takes three and a half hours to travel 18 miles through the San Juan mountains from the Wild West and mining town of Silverton to Durango, but the scenery (particularly at the time we were there when the fall colours were much in evidence) is superb.

Hopefully you can see that in these photos:

That does indeed look very good - you're making me feel jealous. We've not gone on holiday abroad since we had Dave, so it's about time....

I didn't even know about it. Now I have even MORE reasons to visit Durango than knowing 2 people there. One more trip to put on the list of, "Trips to take when the little one will be old enough to remember it." It's already a bit too long now!

Yep, we've got a lengthy wish-list too :)

Durango itself was a cool town to got out in, much livelier than the towns we went to in New Mexico where everyone seemed to go to bed at 9pm. The other reason to go is the amazing San Juan Skyway scenic drive through the mountains. I'll post those pictures next. It's also very close to Mesa Verde.
