Recent Reading: Books

I’ve read quite a few graphic novels in the last month – nearly all old stuff, most of which I’d not read for about 20 years!

12. Blood of the Immortal by Hiroaki Samura. The first manga I’ve ever read. Might well be the last too – couldn’t really make out what was going on for most of this. I think I’m too old for this stuff!

13-14 Hellblazer Books 2 & 3 by Jamie Delano. Enjoyed rereading these – might need to dig out some of the old comics to remind myself exactly what happened in Newcastle.

15-20. Swamp Thing Books 1-6 by Alan Moore. Alan Moore’s stint on Swamp Thing with great art from Steve Bisette and John Totleben. Also good fun to reread – first appearance of John Constantine in the American Gothic saga where Moore updates several classic horror tropes – including vampires, zombies and werewolves.

21. Swamp Thing: A Murder of Crows. The second half of American Gothic – it wasn’t as good as I remembered it. Too many weird supernatural DC superheroes by half. I do still really like the creepy bit where the nun gets off at a closed Mornington Crescent tube station in a desperate (and unsuccessful) attempt to escape the invunche.

22. Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld: this was OK but the plot was a bit too convulted and then required far too much exposition at the end to explain what the bloody hell had been going on! It also reminded me of Caleb Carr’s much better book, The Alienist. If this is the best book of 2007, as awarded by Galaxy/Richard & Judy viewers, it doesn’t say much for their taste.

"...the best book of 2007, as awarded by Galaxy/Richard & Judy viewers..."

Richard and Judy viewers, out of their heads on sugar and theobromine? I think the answer is right there!

Hmm, I don't agree about you being too old. Manga in Japan is read by all ages of people from all walks of life, although much of the stuff that's published in English is for the young adult/teenage crowd. This one isn't one of those, however, but one of the rarer, more mature titles to be translated, before the manga boom of recent years. Sorry you didn't like it, though!
