At the Bazaar

Some more Istanbul photos - this time of the huge, covered Grand Bazaar, and the much smaller Spice Bazaar (or Egyptian Bazaar). The Grand Bazaar was amazing to wander around, consisting of over 4,000 shops selling all sorts of stuff, from tourist souvenirs like hanging lamps and ceramics to jeans, gold jewellery and antiques. The original bazaar was built by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror after he captured Istanbul in 1453, then enlarged during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century. It was restored after an earthquake in 1894.

We managed to get out of the Grand Bazaar having spent a modest amount of lira on some bowls and a couple of little shades for tea lights. We did some haggling but we're not very good at it so it's just as well we didn't try and buy a carpet!
