Shocking

After the disappointment of last Saturday's game against the USA, I think everyone was expecting for a fired-up England to make sure they did the business against Algeria to get their World Cup campaign back on track.

Instead, they just seemed completely clueless and Algeria more than had the better of them, making it one of the dullest games of football I've ever had the misfortune to watch. As for Rooney - he has had two poor games and it's not surprising the fans are frustrated. At least Gerrard admitted afterwards they weren't good enough. If we scrape through to the next round by beating Slovenia, we're sure to crash out in the first knockout game.

In other football news, I am very pleased the new owners of Palace have picked George Burley as our manager, and also that Dougie Freedman (Palace legend) will be assisting him. Starting to feel optimistic about next season.....

I had wondered if might you might not be too happy about Burley - he has a distinctly mixed history as a manager.

Other than the unfamiliar feeling of actually being glad to see David James between the sticks, last night was torture from beginning to end. Rooney was awful - there is a case for leaving him out, frankly - and the team as a whole seemed to have forgotten how to run, pass or control the ball. Surely Joe Cole must be given a go.

Burley didn't do well with Scotland but he did well at Hearts and very well in the Championship with Ipswich. He's also not an ex-Palace player - I didn't really like the idea of Coleman or Southgate following the Peter Taylor debacle.

Yep, Joe Cole should at least be given a go in the next game.

I was thinking as well of Burley's spell at Derby, where he had a good (second) season as far as results went but seemed to fall out pretty badly with the board.

Avoiding Chris Coleman was a good thing though.

Ah, forgotten about Derby! Quite a few managers have felt out with that board IIRC, but I think Burley has fallen out with one or two other boards too over the years.
